Problem with upgraded Jalview on Windows and Linux

Jalview on Windows 10 and 11

We are aware of a problem with launching existing Jalview installations on Windows that have automatically upgraded from 2.11.4.1, or earlier, to 2.11.5.0.

If your Jalview updated to 2.11.5.0 and now no longer launches (the splash screen might appear, but Jalview itself doesn’t) then you can fix this problem by downloading and running the 2.11.5.0 Windows installer. It will detect your existing installation and it is safe to select update the existing installation. Apologies if you have been without a working Jalview.

If you continue to have problems with your installation please send us a message (feel free to reply to this topic) and we will endeavour to fix it as soon as possible.

Fresh installations of Jalview 2.11.5.0 should work without a problem.

Jalview 2.11.4.0 on Apps Anywhere (Windows)

We are also aware this problem affects launching Jalview 2.11.4.0 via Apps Anywhere and are working on a fix for this as soon as possible. If you have tried to launch Jalview from Apps Anywhere and it fails to open you can right-click on the Windows Start menu, choose Run, type “jalview” into the Open box and click Okay. This will launch Jalview 2.11.4.0.

Jalview on Linux

Existing installations of Jalview on Linux that upgraded to Jalview 2.11.5.0 recently are experiencing the same problem as described above. The fix is to download one of the 2.11.5.0 Linux installers and run it with

bash ~/Downloads/jalview-2_11_5_0-linux-x64-java_8.sh

or if your Jalview was installed in Administrator mode (if it is installed in /opt/jalview it needs Administrator mode)

sudo bash ~/Downloads/jalview-2_11_5_0-linux-x64-java_8.sh

The installer will detect the existing application and it is safe to select update the existing installation.

If you have any further problems please contact us (feel free to reply to this topic) and we will endeavour to help you fix it.

Apologies for the inconvenience this will have caused some of you.
