jalview+GPL+sources Re: [Debian-med-packaging] ensembl_57-6_amd64.changes REJECTED

the source tarball for the version of Jalview used in that version of
ensembl can be downloaded from
http://www.jalview.org/source/jalview_2_x_y.tar.gz - this can be
considered a permanent URI. The tarball for the version used in
ensembl will include binary dependencies required at compile time, and
they may or may not resolve to debian source packages. However,
presuming Ensembl is GPL, then it is completely fine for an ensembl
source distribution to contain derived works of Jalview (ie binary
distributions) released under GPL and other open-source licences,
however, in order to comply with GPL, you must provide a note
indicating how the source can be obtained. There is absolutely no
requirement for the source itself to be included. Of course, you are
also free to completely incorporate the jalview source in ensembl’s
build - providing you indicate the history of the source and preserve
the appropriate licenses, but make sure you clearly label the jalview
source as such, so a future maintainer can easily update it from
Jalview’s own source.

For any of you mystified by the last posting, this is in response to
an off-list discussion about resolving source/binary dependencies in
the debian source package for Ensembl. It was mostly in response to
this request by Steffen Moller :

if it is GPL then we must ship the source code, too. I think only
the binary code was included.

Which is a requirement of the GPL, not of Debian. Right. But we
need to provide the sources only upon request, also right? And that
request could be then helped very easily. Would that possibly be
acceptable for the "experimental" distribution, also given that we
are in "non-free" already? The homepage of jalview is stated in the
debian/copyright file. So I do not expect any request for the
sources in the first place.

Idea: Jim [upstream of Jalview], would you allow Debian and its
derivative distribution to ship the binary jar file of Jalview as
downloaded together with the sources of Ensembl and refer to your
Jalview home page until we have your Jalview Debian package in the
distribution? Such exceptional licenses are not possible for the
main distribution of Debian, but for non-free this may just be
sufficiently helpful to allow Torsten to accept the package. When
you have the opportunity, please kindly sign your reply with your
GPG key.
