You are using a fairly old version of Jalview - in fact, we released a bug fix for that version which should fix the error you have reported.
You can download the installer for 2.8.0b1 here:

Ideally, of course, you should be using the very latest version of Jalview (2.8.2b1) - but for that you will need to obtain java 7 for your macbook pro… which will mean you’ll also need upgrade the operating system from 10.6.8 to at least Lion (10.7).
