Freeze during sequence id/description edit on Mac

Hi JalviewTeam,

I experience a “sensitive spot” (possibly a bug) when I’m editing sequence id/description. If I’m carful with the mouse, it works fine. But the slightest drag with the mouse while in the id/description dialog window brings up the beachball, and Jalview freezes. It doesn’t seem to happen in other dialog windows (I tested a few).

Maybe hard to deal with, and can be avoided by being careful.

Cheers

Rein

Hello Rein,

Thanks for the issue report - I've never heard of this happening before. Could you let me know what os/java version you are running ? You can get this from the Jalview Console (open it by going to the 'Tools->Java console' menu in the desktop window's menu bar).

Thanks
Jim.

Hi Jim,

here it goes:
I first observed the bug with an older Jalview version (2.2; -- noticed, since there was no console to check in). But I have upgraded to 2.5 now (while keeping my newer files, with my personal settings, I presume),. -- and I have recreated the bug in also this version.

System and Java paramterers are:
Jalview Desktop 2.5
Build Date: 01 May 2010
Java version: 1.5.0_20
i386 Mac OS X 10.5.8

Thanks for the additional info, Rein - and I hope you enjoy the new features in 2.5 !

I've just checked and I can't reproduce the hang on my 10.6 mac, or on my windows machine, so I'll get back to you in a day or two after I've rebooted into 10.5 and checked there.

For now, if you'd like to have a go at updating your java, that might solve the problem. I don't have record of any issues regarding 1.5.0_20 on OSX 10.5, but it could be that moving to java 1.6 will solve the problem. If you've kept your java up to date on the mac, then you'll have 1.6 installed but it may not be enabled for running applications - have a hunt around your System's Java preferences to see how to enable it.

Again, thanks for the bug report - it looks like it might be a nasty one to track down, but thats ok!
Jim.
