problems editing sequence

Hello,

I’m running OSX and I want to edit some sequences. I’m having problems being able to insert gaps and remove them, as well as adjust the position of one or two residues.

any thoughts. I followed the FAQS on how to edit sequence but it doesn’t really work well. Do i need to enable my keyboard or something like that.

Thanks

Brock

Jalview has its own alignment editing model - sometimes it helps to
remember that its only possible to create gaps to the left of a sequence
symbol (e.g. holding shift and clicking and dragging a residue to the
left does nothing unless there is a gap that can be deleted). You should
also remember that editing is constrained to the local contiguous set of
columns if you have hidden columns to the right of your sequence, or if
you are editing inside an active selection (in which case, edits are
constrained to the selected region).

Probably not - but you may have inadvertently enabled keyboard mode (F2
toggles between keyboard and mouse editing mode). If, however, you need
to make precise changes, then you may find it easier to use the keyboard.

I hope this helps

Just to add a couple of tips:

1. As Jim says, you can only add gaps to the left of the position, so shift-click drag right, or go into keyboard editing mode. Sometimes people think the editing is not working because they are trying to drag left.

2. Dragging to the right will shift the entire sequence to the right, which is usually not what you want to do. To stop this, first select the columns of a region that includes the part you want to edit (by clicking on the part of the alignment where the numbers are at the top) - you need to make sure you have gaps to the right of the edit point that are within this region. All edits are then constrained to this region.
