New jalview web site

So, when did this go live?

First thoughts:

1. Looks good.

2. It would be good to have the full reference given on the download page.

3. I think we can lose the thanks to Alex Bateman from the front page.

4. David has disappeared from the Authors list for Version 2.0

5. We should add the University of dundee logo somewhere on the front page.

6. jalview 2+ documentation pages don't appear to load.

7. In fact, none of those links seem to work.

8. On overview page, it would be good to link to the amas pages on the www.compbio.dundee.ac.uk web site.

Geoff.

Hi

You can also take me off the acknowledgements, otherwise I may feel forced to find some more bugs  I'm happy to have helped but have already had my return by being able to use jalview without all the quirks and crashing of the old version. Maybe you could put the acknowledgements and history in an 'about' page?

I would suggest the main pane of the homepage should be rearranged to 3 subheadings:
1. What is Jalview
Three short sentence description with mini combo screenshot so visitors can see at a glance (picture worth 1000 words etc), leading to full description and screenshots
2. See Jalview in Action
Three short sentences to get visitors to relate to how they could use jalview, leading to a tutorial project/applet
3. Need help?
Twwo sentences luring people to a section offering your support options and resources (faq, quick ref, release history, support email

Convention is that website menus should not have more than 6-7 items, which define top level functions. These can then interlink to each other where appropriate (eg overview leads to tutorial, tutorial leads to support, everything leads to download!). My suggestions:
- home
- overview
- tutorial (include applets as examples/tutorial)
- downloads (put all resources including source code and documentation in there too)
- support
- about

I would also go for some harder colours and curved corners, since these are the trend these days. For example, something like www.drupal.org

Hope this helps.

Andrew.

The Jalview website has been updated for the recommendations below.

Note : links on documentation page all work, they appear in a new target window "NEW". Its possible this window is minimized so you are not seeing the page changes.
